Career
The Kentucky-born pitcher made his way into Major League Baseball in 1912 with the Cleveland team. His prowess and tenacity on the field led him to set a team record of a stolen base of 52 in 1917, which stood till 1980.
Personal Life
Chapman married Kathleen Daly in 1920.
Achievements
Chapman was inducted into the Cleveland Hall of Fame in 2006.
How Ray Chapman died
In a game against New York Yankees, the Cleveland Indians shortstop got struck directly in the head by a powerful pitch from Yankees pitcher Carl William Mays. Chapman was completely blindsided by the pitch, as the pitch went through the air in an irregular motion. With blood oozing from his ear, Chapman tried to dash to the bench to receive medical treatment. But he could not make it and fell to the field. As he stretched off the field, the baseball player was unconscious. He was later pronounced dead at the St. Lawrence Hospital in New York City.
At the time of his death, his wife, Kathleen, was expecting a baby.
