Ramy Mohamed Ashour is an Egyptian former professional squash player widely regarded as one of the greatest squash stars in history. His unique style made him a fan favorite during his playing years, nicknamed “The Artist.”
Background & Early Career
At age 16, in 2004, he won the Male World Junior Squash Championship, becoming one of the youngest squash players in history to achieve the feat. He also won the same event in 2006, becoming the first squash player to win the event twice.
Professional Career Highlights
His first major glory came in 2007 when he defeated fellow squash player David Palmer to clinch the “Canadian Squash Classic.” He also won the 2007 “Kuwait Open.”
In 2009, Ramy was arguably the best squash player, winning the year’s “Saudi International” and “PSA Masters.” As a result, he was ranked World Number One in January 2010 at age 22.
2012 was one of his best career years, as he qualified for the final of every competition he participated in and won the US Open, Australian Open, Hong Kong Open, and the PSA World Championship in Qatar. Unfortunately, his 49-game unbeaten run was cut short by a plague of injuries in 2013.
Ramy experienced a series of recurring injuries, and it forced him to retire from the sport at age 31 on April 22, 2019.
