About Ramsey Lewis
American-born jazz composer Ramsey Emmanuel Lewis Jr also doubled as a radio personality and had over 75 albums under his name. The talented composer had more than 4 gold records and won Grammy Awards on more than 2 occasions.
Early Life
Lewis was born to Pauline and Ramsey Lewis Sr. The Chicago-born composer found his love for music at the age of 4 and began his piano lessons. He joined numerous jazz bands such as Edward Virgil Abner's Knights of Music and later co-founded the Ramsey Lewis Trio.
Career
He made his professional debut with the song "Ramsey Lewis and his Gentle-men of Swing" in 1956. He then went on to utilize the fame he had garnered to produce other popular records such as "Stretching Out" in 1960, "Never on Sunday" in 1961, " Bossa Nova" in 1962 and "Legacy" in 1978.
Lewis released masterpieces such as "Taking Another Look in 2011 and "Manha de Carnaval" in 2021.
Grammy Awards
For his work “The In Crowd” he earned a Grammy Award in the category “Best Jazz Performance – Small Group or Soloist with Small Group”.
In 1966, he also won a Grammy Award for “Hold It Right There”.
Personal Life
The multiple Grammy Award winning composer was married to Geraldine Taylor from 1954 to 1989 and later married Janet Tamillow in 1990.
