About Ralph Steadman
British political cartoonist Ralph Idris Steadman is popularly known for a number of publications in the U.K and U.S. during the late 1960s and 1970s. His works were often controversial with a satirical side. He is also well known for his collaborations with American author Hunter S. Thompson. Some of his illustrations appeared in editions of “Alice in Wonderland” and “Animal Farm”.
Also his illustrations have featured in publications such as in The New Yorker, The New York Times and The Observer.
Family
He is the son of English man, Lionel Raphael Steadman, and Welsh woman, Gwendoline.
Education
He went to the Grammar School in Abergele in Wales but dropped out at age six sixteen. He later attended East Ham Technical College and the London College of Printing.
Career
He worked as a cartoonist in England after his National Service in the year 1954. While studying at the London College of Printing in the 1960’s, he worked as a freelancer for magazines and newspapers, including Punch, the Daily Telegraph, Private Eye, and Rolling Stone.
Collaboration with Hunter S. Thompson
Steadman worked extensively with Thompson, making illustrations for many of his articles and books. They went together to the Kentucky Derby, a horse race for an article for the magazine Scanlan’s.
Steadman worked on the illustration for Thompson’s novels: "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72" and “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".
The cartoonist also worked with writers such as Brain Patten, Ted Hughes and Adrian Mitchell. In addition to editions of “Animal Farm”, he illustrated editions of “Alice in Wonderland” and “Treasure Island”.
He has also designed album covers for famous American bands such as Exodus and Ambrosia.
Achievements
He became the patron of the Association of Illustrators, an organization to protect the rights of illustrators.
Steadman contributed to the BirdLife International’s Preventing Extinctions program with an illustration of critically threatened northern bald ibis.
Awards
He won the Francis Williams Book Illustration Award for his illustration of “Alice in Wonderland”.
