Early Life & Education
She was of English descent and was raised in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, Wales. Roberts was educated at the University of Wales and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts between 1945 and 1950.
Acting Career Highlights & Awards
In the 1960s, she was noted for making great contributions to the “British New Wave” through her brilliant performances in “Saturday Night and Sunday Morning” and “This Sporting Life”. She was honored with the “BAFTA Award for Best British Actress” for both films.
In 1976, she earned a “Drama Desk Award” for her role in “Habeas Corpus”. She also won the “BAFTA Award for Supporting Actress” for her performance in “Yanks”.
Her most notable theatre performance was in the 1964 musical “Maggie May”. Roberts’ other famous films include “This Sporting Life”, “Picnic at Hanging” and “Murder on the Orient Express”.
Personal Life & Death
She married twice in her lifetime to fellow actors Alan Dobie and Rex Harrison. She died, aged 53, on November 26, 1980. An autopsy report later revealed her death as suicide.
