About Preston Tucker
Preston Tucker was an American businessman who was very influential in the automobile industry during the 1930s and 40s. His journey to success began in 1935 when he co-founded Miller and Tucker Inc., an automobile company.
He established the Tucker Aviation Corporation in 1944 before setting up Tucker Corporation through which he built his most popular car in 1948 which was known as ‘the Tucker 48’ (also called Tucker Torpedo). Though production of the car ceased in 1949, it laid the foundation for the production of some modern cars. He also formed the Tucker Export Corporation.
Legal challenges
Tucker had a long-standing battle with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). His decision to sell accessories of his cars before they were produced raised lots of eyebrows. The SEC began investigating his company in 1949. He was later charged with a number of offenses including “violations of SEC regulation” and mail fraud. His company was closed later that year.
Family
He was raised by his parents Lucille Caroline Preston and Shirley Harvey Tucker. Until his death, he was married to Vera Tucker. The couple had five children.
Education
He graduated from Cass Technical High School.
Death
He passed away in 1956 after battling with pneumonia.
Trivia
Tucker built the Carioca sports car with help from Alexis de Sakhnoffsky.
The renowned businessman was the subject of the 1988 film entitled “Tucker: The Man and His Dream”.
