About Pope Sixtus V
At the age of 12 years, Pope Sixtus V joined the Franciscan Order where he began his theological and philosophical training. Before completing his study in 1544, he had already been appointed a deacon. In 1570, he was made a cardinal by Pope Pius V, and was then known as Cardinal Montalto.
After serving in that position for 15 years, he was elected to the papacy and was made the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. During his reign, he fought against lawlessness and corruption in Rome, and has been described as one of the key figures in the Catholic Reformation.
Family
His original name was Felice Piergentile, and was the son of Mariana da Frontillo and Francesco Piergentile.
Death
He passed away in 1590 after battling malarial fever.
Trivia
He served under Pope Gregory XIII.
As part of his foreign policies, he excommunicated King Henry IV of France, and Queen Elizabeth I of England.
