About Pope Pius VII
Pope Pius VII, whose original name was Barnaba Niccolò Maria Luigi Chiaramonti, became a member of the Catholic Church’s Order of Saint Benedict at the age of 14 years. He was later made a priest in 1765 when he was 23 years.
In 1782, he was selected as the Bishop of Tivoli, and became the Bishop of Imola three years later. That same year, he was promoted to the position of a cardinal. After Pope Pius VI was captured by the French soldiers during the French Revolutionary Wars, Chiaramonti was elected as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church. This also made him the supreme overseer of the Papal States.
Dealing with Napoleon I
He spent most of his tenure dealing with Napoleon Bonaparte’s treatment of the church. The Pope constantly fought for the release of priests, monks, prelates, nuns and other religious figures that were imprisoned by the French leader.
In order to grant religious freedom to Catholics residing in France, the two leaders signed the Concordat of 1801.

He was the son of Giovanna Coronata and Count Scipione Chiaramonti. His siblings were Tommaso, Ottavia, and Giacinto Ignazio.
Education
He studied at the Collegio dei Nobili.
