About Pope Pius IX
Pope Pius IX became Pope of the Roman Catholic Church after succeeding Pope Gregory XVI in 1846 and reigned from that time until his death in 1878. His reign as pope for more than 31 years made him the longest-reigning elected pope in the entire history of the Catholic Church. In 1985, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable and went on to beatify him in 2000.
Trivia
He made history by becoming the first pope to be photographed. All the popes before him were not photographed because photography did not exist by that time.
During his burial, his body was almost stolen and thrown into the Tiber River by a group of anticlerical nationalists.
His beatification was strongly opposed by many, including certain groups of Jews because of his alleged anti-Semitic record and abuse of power.
