About Pope Paul IV
Pope Paul IV, whose real name was Gian Pietro Carafa, was the Papal States and the Catholic Church leader from May 23, 1555, until he passed away in 1559. He is widely remembered for running an anti-Spanish & Jewish policy during his time as Pope. This resulted in several wars and conflicts during his Papacy such as the war between the Habsburgs and France in the 1550s.
Background
He was born in Capriglia Irpina, Italy. His ecclesiastical achievements and advancement were influenced and inspired by his uncle Catholic Cardinal Oliviero Carafa.
Religious Career
He served as an ambassador, the Catholic Church’s ambassador to “Papal nuncio” and England in the 1520s. In 1524, Pope Clement (VII) permitted him to renounce his benefices and later join the recently created “Congregation of Clerks Regular”, widely known as the “Theatines”. Between 1534 and 1549, Pope Paul III appointed him to sit on the Rome committee in charge of the reformation of the Papal court. Additionally, he became a Cardinal Priest and the Archbishop of Naples in 1536.
Catholic Pope
On May 25, 1555, the Protodeacon crowned him as the Catholic Pope, and he took the pontifical name “Pope Paul IV” to honor “Pope Paul III” who made him a Cardinal.
