About Pope Leo XII
Pope Leo XII led the Catholic Church and the Papal States from September 28, 1823 to February 10, 1829. He was already in poor health when he was elected as pope.
He was unpopular during his reign due to several factors. They include the condemnation of Bible societies, forbidding the ownership of property by Jews, making it compulsory for all residents of Rome irrespective of religion to listen to commentary on Catholic catechism, threatening to excommunicate dressmakers who sold “inappropriate” dresses and his inability to improve the finances of the Papal States despite raising taxes.

He was named Annibale Francesco Clemente Melchiorre Girolamo Nicola della Genga at birth. His parents’ names were Maria Luisa Periberti di Fabriano and Count Ilario della Genga. He had nine siblings.
