About Pope Gregory XVI
Pope Gregory XVI headed the Catholic Church between 1831 and 1846. During his reign, he was not necessarily popular mainly because of his strict conservatism. He concerned himself with expanding Roman Catholicism through missionary activities.
Background
Brought up in the Catholic tradition, he became a member of the Camaldolese order at age 18 and joined the Monastery of San Michele di Murano.
Notable Facts
He was ordained priest in 1787. During this period, he taught theology and published the book, “Il Toronto della Santa Sede contro gli Assalti dei novato”. He was appointed cardinal in 1825 and was elected pope 6 years later. A committed conservative, he was against democracy and modernization in Europe. His primary focus was on reforming religious orders and spreading Catholicism.
Legacy
Pope Gregory XVI launched the merit medals to honor civil and military valor.
