About Pope Gregory XIV
Niccolò Sfondrato, who became Pope Gregory XIV, was the Papal States leader and head of the Catholic Church between December 5, 1590 and October 16, 1591. During his papacy, he broadened the internal reformation of the Catholic Church and continued many policies of his predecessors.
Background & Early Career
He was born in Somma Lombardo, Italy. The clergyman read law at the Universities of Padua and Perugia. After his ordinance as a priest, he was made “Bishop of Cremona”. As a result, he participated in the “Council of Trent” between 1561 and 1563. Then, in December 1583, Pope Gregory XIII ordained him the “Cardinal-Priest of Santa Cecilia”.
Papal Election & Papacy
On December 5, 1590, the Sacred College elected Sfondrato to succeed Pope Urban VII as the head of the Catholic Church. He then took the pontificate name “Pope Gregory XIV” to honor “Pope Gregory XIII”.
During his reign, he reinforced the “Catholic League” by providing a monthly 15,000 scudi grant to Paris, France. In addition, he made five new cardinals in two Papal consistories. However, he was often criticized for practicing nepotism and highly despised by some Roman citizens for food shortages and the anarchy during his brief reign.
Death
The pope died from cholelithiasis at age 56 on October 16, 1591, in Rome, Papal States.
