About Pope Francis
Pope Francis became the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in 2013 becoming the first person from the Americas and the first non-European since Pope Gregory III of Syria to lead the Catholic Church. In 2013, Time magazine named him its “Person of the Year”.
Career
He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1969 and became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998. In 2001, he was elevated to the position of a Cardinal by Pope John Paul II.
Family Life
He was the eldest of the five children born to Regina Maria Sivori and Mario José Bergoglio.
Trivia
He once worked as a nightclub bouncer before starting his seminary studies and being ordained a Catholic priest.
