About Pope Clement XI
Pope Clement XI, whose maiden name was Giovanni Francesco Albani, was made the Referendary of the Apostolic Signatura during the tenure of Pope Innocent XII. He went on to serve in a number of governorship positions before he was appointed as the Cardinal-Deacon of Santa Maria in Aquiro in 1690.
Pope Innocent XII’s death was announced in 1700 and Albani was considered as one of the candidates to occupy the vacant position. He won the election which was held that same year and became the leader of Papal States and the Roman Catholic Church.
Known to be a lover of science and arts, Clement XI furnished the Vatican library and also helped to build a number of structures including the obelisk on the famous Piazza della Rotonda.

He was the son of Carlo Albani and Elena Mosca.
Education
Albani studied at Rome’s Collegio Romano.
Trivia
During his time as the Pope of the Church, he canonized some well-known personalities like Pope Pius V, and Andrew Avellino.
He was succeeded by Pope Innocent XIII.
