In 1991, Joseph had a serious stroke which he miraculously recovered from completely. Joseph had wanted to retire but Pope John Paul II urged him not to. He was the 4th oldest person to serve as Pope. After his retirement he enjoyed writing. Throughout his lifetime, Benedict authored more than 60 books. He also had various honorary doctorate degrees from colleges around the world.
