Pope Alexander VI was Pope from August 11 until his death on August 18, 1503. He is widely regarded as one of the most controversial popes of the Renaissance. He was known for his lavish life style, love for money, and for fathering several children with different mistresses.
Family Life
He was the son of Jofré Llançol i Escrivà and Isabel de Borja y Cavanilles. He had numerous affairs with different mistresses. The most famous of his mistresses was Vannoza (Giovanna) dei Cattanei whose children he openly acknowledged were his children.
Trivia
Months after Alexander VI’s death, Pope Julius II called for the name and memory of Alexander VI to be forgotten because he “desecrated the Holy Church as none before”.
