About Pierre Laporte
Between 1945 and 1961, Canadian journalist Pierre Laporte worked with the newspaper firm known as Le Devoir. He was one of the main critics of the Maurice Duplessis-led administration in the Quebec province. Laporte was one of the publication’s senior journalists who exposed the 1958 gas scandal.
Political Career
Laporte was also into politics. He contested for a seat in the Quebec National Assembly after the death of Duplessis. Associated with the Quebec Liberal Party, the famous journalist was an active member of Jean Lesage’s government. In 1970 he was named as Quebec’s Deputy Premier.
Family
His grandfather Alfred Leduc was also into politics. He was married to Françoise Brouillet.
Death
He was held hostage by officials of the militant group known as the Front de libération du Québec. He was found dead seven days after his kidnap.
Trivia
He was the subject of Guy Gendron’s documentary which premiered on Radio-Canada.
Jean Charest unveiled a monument of Laporte in 2010.
