About Phillis Wheatley
Phillis Wheatley was an African-American poet who gained reputation for being the first published African-American female poet after her collection of 39 poems titled Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral was published in 1773. Following the publication of her work, President George Washington praised her for her literary skills.
Personal Life
After she was freed from slavery by her master John Wheatley's will in 1778, she married fellow freed slave John Peters. The marriage produced three children, all of whom died as infants.
Trivia
She was born in West Africa, where she lived until she was sold into slavery at the age of seven.
Besides being the first published African-American female poet, she also made history by becoming the first African-American woman to ever make a living from writing.
She died in 1784 at the age of 31 after her husband was jailed for being unable to pay a debt. Hours after her death, her infant son also died.
