About Philip Glass
Composer and pianist, Philip Glass is mostly referred to as the most influential composer of the 20th century. Due to similarities in his works and that of fellow composers such as Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and Steve Reich, his songs are widely described as "minimal music".
He is credited for having founded the American music group, "Philip Glass Ensemble" in 1968, where he is also noted for playing keyboards. As of July of 2020, he boasts of having written several operas, film scores, eight string quartets, twelve symphonies, and numerous chamber music. At least, three of his film scores have bagged Academy Award nominations.
Family Life
His parents are father, Benjamin Glass who was a record shop owner while his mother, Ida Glass was a librarian. His siblings are Sheppie and Marty Glass. He was married to JoAnne Akalaitis from 1965 until 1980. He married American multimedia artist and graphic designer, Candy Jernigan in 1991 and they both separated the same year. His children are Cameron, Zachary, Marlowe, and journalist, Juliet Glass.
Achievements
His work, "The Truman Show" earned him the "Best Original Score" at the 1998 ‘Golden Globe Awards’ and he got nominated for the "Best Original Score" in 1997 and 2002 with his works, "Kundun" and "The Hours" respectively.
He was installed into the "American Classical Music Hall of Fame" in 2010 and received the "Contemporary Composer of the Year" at the 2004 ‘Classic Brit Awards’.
He was bestowed a "NEA Opera Honors Award" in 2010 and the "National Medal of Arts" in 2015.
He picked up the "Kennedy Center Honors" in 2018 and the "Recording Academy Trustees Award" in 2010.
Trivia
He earned an honorary Doctor of Music from Juilliard School in 2014.
