About Phil Ochs
Phil Ochs rose to become a household name in the 1960s due to his involvement in activities of the counterculture period. He wrote protest songs and performed them at events such as the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War rallies, organized labor movements and student events in the 1960s. His first album, “All the News That’s Fit to Sing” was released in 1964 and his final album, “Gunfight at Carnegie Hall” came out in 1975, a year before his death.
Family Life
His parents were Gertrude Phin and Jacob Ochs. He was the brother of music producer and radio host Sonia Ochs and photographic archivist Michael Ochs. He was married to Alice Skinner from 1962 until his death. They had a daughter named Meegan Lee Ochs.
Achievements
He was posthumously honored with the Elaine Weissman Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.
Death
He died by suicide on April 9, 1976 after struggling with bipolar disorder.
