Pierre Culliford, famously called Peyo, was a highly gifted Belgian artist and comic writer. He was internationally famed for creating “The Smurfs” and “Johan and Peewit” comic books.

He married Janine Culliford in 1952, and they had a son and a daughter together in their marriage.
Career Highlights
In the 1940s, he briefly worked at the “Compagnie Belge d'Actualités” animation studio. However, after World War II, he made various comic strips for newspapers, including “Le Soir.”
In the early 1950s, he brought his famous character “Johan” to Spirou magazine. He then added the “Peewit” character to his “Johan” comic, which made his strip a weekly staple in the magazine.
However, his comic career shot to fame in 1958, after he launched “The Smurfs” in “The Magic Flute,” a storyline in his “Johan and Peewit” strip.
He created his notable “Jacky and Celestin” and “Steven Strong” series in 1960. Peyo invested the whole 1970s into producing “The Smurfs and the Magic Flute.” In the 1980s, he oversaw the adaptation of his famous comic “The Smurfs” into an animated TV series. He subsequently founded his publishing center “Cartoon Creation” and later joined “Le Lombard.”
Death
On Christmas Eve in 1992, Peyo suffered a severe heart attack and passed away at age 64.
