About Peter Agre
A pioneering figure in science, the American biologist Peter Agre discovered the aquaporin water channels responsible for the movement of water across cell membranes. He received a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2003.
Education
Originally from Minnesota, he earned his M.D. degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1974. After a postgraduate degree in 1981 he pursued a higher program in biological chemistry at Johns Hopkins.
Major Accomplishments
He started his ground-breaking research on water channels in cell membranes. By 1988, he had succeeded in separating a type of protein molecule in the cell membrane, which turned out to be the sought-after water channel. He also found out that cells which had the protein increased in size as water flowed into them. He called the protein aquaporin.
Other Achievements and Honors
He was appointed to the National Academy of Sciences in 2000; and three years later, he got a call to the American Academy of Arts and Science. The Nobel Prize winner also got appointed as director of Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute in 2008.
