About Pete Rozelle
Pete Rozelle was an American business executive who has been eulogized for his role in the development of the National Football League. He served as the league’s commissioner between 1960 and 1989. It was during his tenure that the Super Bowl was created.
He also oversaw the merger of the American Football League and the National Football League during the 1960s. As the commissioner, he expanded the league to 28 teams from the initial 12. The renowned businessman also negotiated for high television rights which improved the economic situation of the organization.
Private Life
In 1949, he tied the knot with Jane Coupe. They had their first child in 1958 named Anne Marie. After their divorce, Rozelle married Carrie Cooke in 1973.
Education
In 1944, he completed his education at Compton High School. He continued at Compton Community College before moving to the University of San Francisco.
Recognitions
In 1985, the renowned business executive was selected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Five years later, the American Academy of Achievement honored him with the Golden Plate Award. He has also been named the “Sportsman of the Year” by the Sports Illustrated.
Death
He suffered from brain cancer which caused his death in 1996.
