About Paul Valéry
Paul Valery was a French poet and philosopher. He studied law at the university and developed multiple careers as journalist, essayist and literary critic.
Family
Valery married Jeannine Gobillard, and the pair had three children together.
Academic Positions
Valery was secretary to the CEO of Havas News, Edouard Lebey and after his death in 1920, Valery began to devote considerable time to his writings.
As an Academie Francaise in 1925, he embarked on European tours and gave public lectures on culture and social issues, as well as served as cultural ambassador for France.
He founded the College International de Cannes in 1931, and assumed other offices as Chief Executive of Nice University in 1937 and the Chair of Poetics at College de France.
Writings
In 1898, he quit writing and resumed in 1917 with one of the best French poems of the 20th century “La Jeune Parque”.
He also made compilations of poems titled “Album of Old Verses” and “Charmes” and the five-volume articles titled “Variétés”.
The “Casiers”, translated as “Notebooks”, was written in the form of a diary mainly about science and mathematics. It became one of his most celebrated works.
Did you know?
The titles of a Japanese novel and of Hayao Miyazaki’s film “The Wind Rises” were taken from Valery’s poem “Le Cimetiere Marin”.
Again, Octavio Paz’s “El Laberinto de la Soledad” and Cormac McCarthy’s novel “Blood Meridian” both made references to Valery’s writings.
