About Paul Pelliot
French sinologist and orientalist Paul Eugène Pelliot gained notoriety for his research of Central Asia. His contributions to the study of Central Asian languages and the history of the region's various religions and cultures are particularly noteworthy.
Biography
He joined the Mission archéologique d'Indochine (Ecole française d'Extrême-Orient) in Hanoi after graduating from the École des Langues Orientales Vivantes. He assembled the foundation of an impressive Chinese library for the School, where he served as chair.
He traveled to China and Chinese Turkestan again (1906 - 1909), collecting notably at Kucha and the Tun-huang caves, over 30,000 volumes of Chinese printed books and 4,000–5,000 manuscripts in Chinese, Tibetan, Sogdian, Uighur, and Tokharian for the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris.
As a result of his distinctive work, the Collège de France made him a professor in 1911 and established the Chair of the Languages, History, and Archaeology of Central Asia in his honor.
As a military attaché during World War I (WWI), he even oversaw an expedition into Siberia. He succeeded Chavannes as editor of T'oung Pao, the premier journal in Far Eastern Asian studies, in 1920. He contributed many illustrious pieces on both Chinese and Central Asian history to the journal.
