About Paul Ludwig Ewald von Kleist
German military officer Paul Ludwig Ewald von Kleist fought in World Wars l and World War ll and The Battle of Brody as a field marshal. Although he was a high-ranking officer, he was kicked out of the army in March 1944 because of disputes with German führer Adolf Hitler on tactical decisions.
Background
Kleist was raised in a wealthy family and was born in Braunfels a der Lahn. He graduated from a German military academy in 1900. At the age of 18, he joined the Prussian Field Artillery Regiment.
Military Career
He served as a regimental commander and a lieutenant in the Hussars during World War I. After the war, he commanded a cavalry division from 1932 until 1935.
Trial and Death
Kleist was transported to Yugoslavia in 1946 to face war crimes charges after being captured by American soldiers in 1945. He was given a 10-year sentence for war crimes in the Soviet Union in 1952 after being extradited there in 1948. He was the most senior German general to pass away while held by the Soviet Union. The former German military officer died on November 13, 1954.
Trivia
In 1940, as World War II raged, Kleist received the "Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross," which has a higher grade known as "Oak Leaves and Swords," for exhibiting combat bravery and superior military leadership.
