About Paul Laurence Dunbar
At age six, Paul Laurence Dunbar wrote his first poem, and three years later he made his first recital. In 1888, at age 16, he published his first poem in the Dayton-based newspaper known as The Herald. He unveiled his first poem collection in 1892 which was entitled “Oak and Ivy”.
Other works
Aside from poems, the American writer also published a number of short stories. His first work of that nature was titled “Folks From Dixie” and was published in 1898. Five years later, he wrote a musical comedy known as “In Dahomey”.
“The Sport of the Gods”, which is widely considered as his most popular novel, was released in 1902.
Family
His parents Matilda and Joshua served as slaves. He grew up in the midst of his two half-brothers William and Robert. He was the husband of fellow poet Alice Ruth Moore.
Fun Facts
Educational institutions such as Chicago’s Paul Laurence Dunbar Vocational High School, and Paul Laurence Dunbar High School located in Lexington, Kentucky were all named after him.
His image was featured on a 1975 postal stamp in the United States.
