About Paul Ehrlich
After returning from a trip in 1889, Paul Ehrlich established a laboratory in Berlin-Steglitz called the Institute for Serum Research and Testing (now known as the Paul Ehrlich Institute). Prior to that, he worked with the Berlin Institute of Infectious Diseases which he joined in 1891.
He became a global icon in the 1910s when his lab discovered the arsphenamine drug which served as one of the earliest effective syphilis medicines. His precursor approach of Gram staining provided the foundation for differentiating the various blood cells.
He also developed and popularized the “magic bullet” concept. As one of the prominent physicians in history, he introduced and named the chemotherapy concept of treating cancer.
Family
He was born to Ismar Ehrlich and Rosa Weigert. He had two children with Hedwig Pinkus named Marianne and Stephanie.
Education
He studied at the Maria-Magdalenen-Gymnasium.
Decorations
He was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1908. Six years later, he received the Cameron Prize of the University of Edinburgh.
Trivia
German physician, Hans Schlossberger, was one of his well-known students.
His name was given to a crater on the moon in 1970 as a way of honoring his contributions to science.
Until 2001, his image was printed on the 200 Deutsche Mark note.
