Injury
Rafter lost in the first round of the US Open, where he was serving as a two-time defending champion leading him to retire in the fifth set against tennis star Cédric Pioline after suffering from shoulder tendinitis.
Rafter did not participate in the Davis Cup final won by Australia in 1999 due to his injury and surgery.
He also did not take part in any tour matches in 2002 as he was recovering from injury.
In January 2003, Rafter announced his retirement from professional tennis, and according to him, he had lost all motivation to compete at the top level.
