Career Highlights
Gonzales played in the US Championship in 1948 and won the game, ranking world No. 1 amateur by Ned Potter. He later played in the Wimbledon tournaments in 1949 and 1969 and won his singles games in the Davis Cup finals against Australia.
Gonzalez won the U.S. Pro Indoor Championship at Philadelphia in late March, beating Kramer in the final in straight sets. He was also the winner of the tournament at Wembley, beating Don Budge and Welby Van Horn.
The tennis player participated in the French tournament in 1956 and won a classic final with Sedgman in four long sets. He was ranked the world's No.1 professional for 1956 by Jack March.
In 1969, he played in the French tournament 1969.
He retired from playing professional tennis in 1974.
Honors
In 1968, he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame at Newport.
California State University's tennis center, the Rosie Casals/Pancho Gonzales Tennis Center, was named after him in 2013.
