About Otis Spann
Otis Spann was a great American blues musician and pianist. He was one of the leading post-World War II Chicago blues pianists and was part of the famed “Muddy Waters” band.
Background & Early Life
Spann was of African descent and was born in Jackson, Mississippi. Both of his parents were instrumentalists, so by age seven, he had learned the piano. At age 14, he began playing the piano for various bands in Jackson.
Career Highlights
In the 1940s, he relocated to Chicago and learned music under Big Maceo Merriweather. He then began to perform with the amazing guitarist Morris Pejeo as a solo act.
Spann joined the “Muddy Waters” in late 1952. He was the band’s main pianist for over 16 years, playing most of their famous songs, such as “Got My Mojo Working,” “Hoochie Coochie Man,” and “I’m Ready.”
However, he was also a successful solo pianist, recording numerous records with famous musicians, including Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, St. Louis Jimmy, Howlin’ Wolf, Jody Williams, and B.B. King.
Between 1950 and 1970, he wowed many music lovers with his spectacular performances at the “Copenhagen Jazz Festival,” “Newport Jazz Festival,” and the “American Folk Blues Festival.”
Cause of Death
The pianist died of liver cancer during April 1970.
