About Oscar Peterson
Canadian musician and composer Oscar Peterson had a career in jazz music that lasted for over sixty years. Nicknamed “the King of Inside Swing” by the jazz community, the pianist put out more than 200 recordings and performed in thousands of concerts across the world. He is remembered as one of the best pianists in the history of jazz music.
Family Life
His parents were from the West Indies, where they left to immigrate to Canada. He was raised in Little Burgundy, Montreal. He was the brother of Canadian classical music teacher, Daisy Peterson Sweeney, who taught him how to play the piano. He had seven children from four marriages.
Achievements
He received 7 Grammy Awards, the Glenn Gould Prize, Praemium Imperiale, UNESCO Music Prize and the Roy Thomson Award amongst others.
Death
He died from kidney failure on December 23, 2007.
