About Omar Sívori
Omar Sívori was a famous soccer star who played for both Italy and Argentina. Born in the South American country, Sívori played for the La Albiceleste between 1956 and 1957. He helped his country of birth to win the 1957 edition of the South American Championship. He later moved to Italy to continue his professional career and made his debut for the Azzurris in 1961.
Career Highlights
Until 1957, the Argentine-born forward starred for River Plate in his native country. He was later signed by Juventus in Italy. He spent close to a decade with the team where he won both the Serie A and the Coppa Italia thrice. He continued his career at another Italian side Napoli. His performance helped the team to win the Coppa delle Alpi in 1966. Three years later, he announced the end of his playing career.
Coaching Career
Like most renowned soccer players, Sívori turned his attention to coaching after announcing his retirement. In 1969, he was named as the coach of Rosario Central. He went on to coach Estudiantes de La Plata before he was appointed as the manager of Argentina’s men soccer team in 1972.
Individual Honors
He was the recipient of the Serie A Golden Boot award after the 1959/60 season. He won the Ballon d'Or in 1961, and was named in Pele’s 2004 “FIFA 100” list.
Trivia
He appeared in the 1970 film “The President of Borgorosso Football Club”.
He was banned from playing for the Argentine national team after migrating to Italy.
