About Omar al-Bashir
Former Sudanese President Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir is a Sudanese politician who ascended to power in 1989 after spearheading a military coup to depose Prime Minister Sadiq al- Mahdi's administration.
His 30-year rule came to an end in 2019 when he was ousted in a coup d'état. Bashir was wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2009 for overseeing a campaign of mass killings, rape, and plunder against civilians in Darfur.
He declared himself chairman of the Revolutionary Command Council for National Salvation after seizing power and banned all political groups, business associations, and government agencies.
He also outlawed independent media and convicted prominent journalists and politicians. After dissolving the Revolutionary Command Council for National Salvation and declaring himself president of the country in 1993, his authority increased substantially.
Omar al-Bashir is an arrogant and egoistic politician who has been chastised for his tyranny and brutal reign.
His relationship with Hassan al-Turabi, an Islamic political figure with ties to Arab militant organizations, boosted his profile, leading to allegations of sheltering and assisting Islamic terror organizations.
He was the first incumbent to be charged by the International Criminal Court (ICC). In late 2018, widespread opposition to his administration had erupted across the country.
In 2019, the Transitional Military Council ousted him from office and dissolved the administration, passing control to a transitional Sovereignty Council and civilian Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.
