Olof Palme served for two non-consecutive terms as the Prime Minister of Sweden: first from 1969 to 1976 and then from 1982 to 1986. His second term was cut short by his assassination.
Career
The Swedish politician’s career began in the 1950s with his recruitment into the secretariat of Prime Minister Tage Erlander. Prior to serving as Prime Minister, he was a Minister of Communications and then a Minister of Education. He led the Social Democratic Party from 1969 until his death. He was known for his opposition to the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War and to apartheid in South Africa.
Family Life
He was the son of Hanna Maria von Born-Sarvilahti, a Finnish baroness and Gunnar Palme, a businessman. He was first married to Jelena Rennerova from 1948 to 1952. Four years later, he married Lisbeth Beck-Friis. He had three children; Joakim, Mattias and Marten.
Olof Palme’s Assassination
He died shortly after he was shot in the back on February 28, 1986 on his way home on foot from a cinema trip with his wife.
