Career
Oliver Cromwell, a man in the middle gentry, was relatively unknown until after he was 40. He came into prominence during the English Civil War. He fought with the Parliamentarians against the those loyal to King Charles I. They took over the Commonwealth, and Cromwell gained power as part of the “Rump Parliament.” He was eventually put in the position of Lord Commander of the Commonwealth, so he was in charge of the whole military. He had an aggressive but effective foreign policy.
