About Ole Einar Bjørndalen
He is a retired Norwegian biathlete, who won 13 Winter Olympic medals. He is known to be one of the greatest biathletes of all time. As a result, he has gone by the nickname “King of Biathlon”.
Background
Hailing from Drammen in southeastern Norway, he grew up amongst five children on a farm in Simostranda, Norway.
Career
At age 16, he left home to enter a sports academy in Geila. He made his first Olympics appearance in 1994, on home soil at Lillehammer. He worked to become a stronger shooter and participated in the 1995 World Cup, where he was fourth overall.
He participated in the 1998 winter Olympics in Japan and won a gold medal in the sprint. He went on to participate in the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy, and many more.
Bjørndalen retired in 2018.
Awards
He won the Aftenposten’s gold medal in 1998.
Ole Einer was honored as the "Norwegian Sportsperson of the Year" in 2002 and 2014.
He was voted by the International Sports Press Association as the Best Male athlete of 2002. 12 years later, the International Sports Press voted him as the Best Male Athlete at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
