About Olaf Kölzig
The former professional ice hockey player of South African origin played as a goal keeper for the German national team and in the National Hockey League for the Washington Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning.
Career
Kölzig started playing major junior hockey for the New Westminster Bruins from 1987 – 88, and Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League (WHL) between 1988 and 1990.
He made his first National Hockey League appearance with the Washington Capitals during the 1989 – 1990 seasons. Kölzig moved to play for the ECHL’s Hampton Roads from 1990 – 91, playing in over 20 matches and winning more than 10. He also played with Baltimore Skipjacks in the American Hockey League for the next season, appearing in more than 25 games and winning about 10. The player returned to Hampton Roads for the 1991 – 92 season. During the 2000s, he played for teams such as Eisbären Berlin and Tampa Bay Lightning.
International Career
He represented the German national team at the World Cup of Hockey in 1996. At the 1998 Winter Olympic Games (held in Nagano, Japan) and the 2004 at the World Championships, Kölzig won two games each.
Awards
The ice hockey player won the 2000 Vezina Trophy and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2006.
