About Oguchi Onyewu
After impressing at the college level, American soccer legend Oguchi Onyewu moved to France in 2002 to continue his career with Metz. He was sent out on loan to Belgian side La Louvière and later Standard Liège before making his move to the latter permanent in 2004. With Liège, he won two Belgian First Division titles.
In 2009, he was signed by Italian giants, A.C. Milan. Mostly used as a central defender, Onyewu played for many well-known clubs such as Newcastle United, Sporting CP, Queens Park Rangers, and Málaga.
International career
The highly-rated soccer star played for the United States’ Under 17 and 20 sides before making his senior debut in 2004. As a member of the team, he played in some major international competitions such as the FIFA Confederations Cup, FIFA World Cup, and the CONCACAF Gold Cup which he won three times.
Other businesses
Aside from his performance on the field, Onyewu has also worked as an executive member for some popular teams. He has worked with Orlando City B as its sporting director. He has also served as the secretary general for Excelsior Virton in Belgium.
Family
He was born to Nigerian parents and grew up in the midst of four siblings.
Education
He studied at Sherwood High School and St. Andrew Apostle School before playing for the soccer team of Clemson University.
Awards
In 2006, he was voted the United States’ Soccer Athlete of the Year. From 2003 to 2005, he was named the “Best Foreign Player” in the Belgian First Division.
Trivia
After making his debut for the U.S. men’s soccer team, he became the second person on the team’s all-time “tallest outfield player” list.
He ended his professional career in 2018.
