About Norman Wexler
Norman Wexler was a famous screenwriter credited with penning hit films such as “Saturday Night Fever”, as well as “Serpico”, and “Joe”. The latter two works earned the American screenwriter Oscar nominations. But that’s not all he’s known for. Wexler’s works revived the musical genre in Hollywood.
Early Years
The Massachusetts native attended Harvard University and later moved to New York City, where he worked in advertising. During that period, he started writing plays before moving to Hollywood.
Career
Wexler wrote “Joe” in 1970 but it was “Saturday Night Fever” that helped Wexler become a renowned screenwriter. The film was successful in establishing the careers of famous actors like John Travolta. His other notable screenwriting works came in films such as “Mandingo”, “Drum”, and “Raw Deal.” The latter, a 1986 action film directed by American filmmaker John Irvin, starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Darren McGavin, and Sam Wanamaker, among others.
Personal Life
He suffered from mental illness, and in 1972, Wexler was arrested for threatening to shoot U.S. President Richard Nixon. In 1999, he died of a heart attack.
