As a pacifist, he sought to change the world by seeking the office of the most powerful leader in the world six times. He campaigned on the ticket of the Socialist Party of America.
Early Life
Born Norman Mattoon Thomas on November 20, 1884 to a Presbyterian minister, it was no brainer Norman would become a minister. After graduating with distinction from Princeton University in 1905, he enrolled in Union Theological Seminary and became a Presbyterian minister in 1911.
Career
As a pacifist who was outspoken about America’s involvement in WW1, he was shunned and by 1931, he resigned his pastoral appointment. In 1928, this orator was appointed leader of the Socialist Party. He opposed President Franklin D. Roosevelt's relocation and incarceration of over 100,000 Japanese Americans after Pearl Harbor attack (on December 7, 1941) and racial segregation. He was the Presidential candidate for the Socialist Party six times from 1928 to 1948
Personal Life
Norman tied the knot with Frances Violet Stewart in 1910, and by 1920, they had five children together.
