About Nicolás Burdisso
Before moving to Europe, Nicolás Burdisso was regarded as one of South America’s finest defenders of his era. He began attracting attention in 1999 when he made his professional debut with Boca Juniors in his native Argentina. With the club, he won two Argentine Primera División titles, and three Copa Libertadores. He also helped them to two Intercontinental Cup successes.
In 2004, the center back was signed by Italian giants Internazionale. During his five years with the club, he won four Serie A trophies, and a Coppa Italia. He also starred for other prominent teams such as Torino, AS Roma, and Genoa.
International Career
Burdisso was a member of the Argentine team that won the FIFA World Youth Championship in 2001. His fine performance earned him a call-up to the senior team in 2003. The following year, he helped his country to win gold in the soccer event of the Olympic Games.
As a member of the senior team, he starred in a number of international tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup, and the Copa América.
Post-Retirement
Burdisso stayed in the sport after announcing his retirement in 2018. In December that year, he was named as Boca Juniors’ sporting director. After three years, he went back to Italy where he was appointed as ACF Fiorentina’s technical director.
Family
He’s the older brother of soccer player Guillermo Burdisso.
Achievements
He was the top-scorer of the 2006–07 Coppa Italia tournament, despite playing most of the games as a center back.
