About Nicanor Parra
Nicanor Parra was a 20th century poet who has been described as one of the greatest of his generation. A self-acclaimed "anti-poet", the Chilean was very popular among the Spanish-speaking countries. In 1937, he published his maiden book entitled “Cancionero sin Nombre”.
Throughout his career, the award-winning poet published a number of books with some titled “Poems to Combat Baldness (Poemas para combatir la calvicie)” and “Christmas Couplets (Coplas de Navidad)”.
Family
He was born to Clarisa Sandoval Navarrete and her husband Nicanor Parra Alarcón. He was the brother of renowned singers Roberto Parra Sandoval and Violeta Parra.
Education
The poet studied at the University of Chile’s Instituto Pedagógico. He later attended Brown University, and Oxford University.
Awards
He received the Pablo Neruda Ibero-American Poetry Award in 2012. A year before that, the Spanish government honored him with the Cervantes Prize. Parra was also nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Trivia
His character was depicted in the 2016 film “Endless Poetry”.
His 1954 poem collection titled “Poemas y Antipoemas” is one of South America’s most popular works.
He served as a teacher during the 1930s.
