About Nelson Eddy
Nelson Ackerman Eddy was well known for his baritone voice and for his appearances in various operas. He is also known for his partnership with soprana Jeanette MacDonald. He also made appearances in films such as “Bitter Sweet”, “Sweethearts”, “I married an Angel”, and “Let Freedom Ring”.
Family
He was the only child of Caroline Isabel and William Darius Eddy. He was married to Ann Denitz Franklin in 1939 and had a relationship with American singer and actress Jeanette MacDonald. He had one son.
Career
His singing talent was nurtured while he was a boy soprano in church choirs. He spent his teen years studying voice and learned the recordings of singers such as Antonio Scotti, Giuseppe Campanari, Pasquale Amato, and Reinald Werrenrath. He also performed in societal theatricals charging very little or nothing at all.
He worked as a newspaper journalist for ten years and was fired for focusing more attention on music than on journalism. Eddy had his breakthrough in 1992 after a theatrical performance, “The Marriage Tax”.
In 1924, Eddy had the chance of performing with the Philadelphia Opera Society in 1924, after winning the ultimate prize in a competition. By the late 1920s, Eddy was performing with the Philadelphia Civic Opera Company and had a list of parts in 28 operas, including Amonasro in “Aida” , Papageno in” The Magic Flute”, and Almaviva in “The Marriage of Figaro”.
Eddy continued performing in operas until his film work made it hard for him to schedule performances a year or two ahead of time, which had been the practice.
Achievements
He gained three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Trivia
He was not educated but took correspondence classes by himself.
Tragic Death
Eddy died a few hours after he was struck on stage with a cerebral hemorrhage while performing “Dardanella” on March 6, 1967.
