About Neil Arnott
Dr. Neil Arnott left his imprint as a life-saving physician and forward-thinking scientist by making the world a far better and safer place to live. The Scotland-born physician developed clever inventions such as the water bed and the smokeless fire grate.
Background
He was homeschooled by his mother and received financial aid to attend Mariscal College at the University of Aberdeen. He was appointed surgeon for the East India Company in 1807.
After serving as a surgeon on two missions to China for the British East India Company, he made his home in London, where he practiced medicine.
He received his M.D. degree from Aberdeen University in 1814. He created his hydrostatic or water bed in 1832, the first of a number of inventions. He was made the Queen's special physician by 1837.
His creations included the design of the smokeless fire grate as well as other advancements in heating and ventilation. Other publications he wrote include "Survey of Human Progress."
Family Life
He passed away in 1874 and was survived by his wife. He was laid to rest in Edinburgh beside his mother.
Honors
In 1852, the physician and inventor received the Rumford Medal.
In 1838, he was called to be a fellow of the Royal Society (FRS).
