Background
He grew up in Istanbul but moved to Moscow where he enrolled at the University of Moscow.
Notable Facts
While in Russia, the poet was drawn to Marxism and got involved in leftist literary journals. Over the next decade following his return to Turkey, he published nine poetry books, including “Şeyh Bedreddin destanı” and “Memleketimden insan manzaraları”. Poems that have been translated into English include “Things I Didn't Know I Loved” and “The Moscow Symphony”. His style was largely inspired by Soviet Futuristic poets.
Legacy
Composers such as Zülfu Lavaneli and Cem Karaca have set several of his songs to music.
