She was born in Buffalo, New York, to a Methodist family. In 1949, she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Carnegie Mellon University. She then learned theatre at New York’s Herbert Berghof Studio.
Career Highlights & Awards
By 1950, she had earned recognition as an experienced member of the Actors Studio. However, she debuted on Broadway in 1951 in the comedy-drama “The Taming of the Shrew”.
She rose to stardom playing the role of Margaret Pynchon on “Lou Grant” between 1977 and 1982, earning her four Emmy Awards. She also won a Golden Globe award for her performance as Livia Soprano on the famous HBO series “The Sopranos”.
Her notable films and performances included “Black Comedy/White Liars”, “The Bachelor Party”, “Dear God” and “Brain Donors”.
Family and Death
She had three children with fellow actor Paul Sparer, her husband of 48 years (1951 to 1999). She died aged 71 on June 18, 2000, after battling lung cancer and emphysema for several months.
