About Murray Gell-Mann
Thanks to his research on the theory of elementary particles, American physicist Murray Gell-Mann became a Nobel laureate in 1969. He worked extensively in academia both as a researcher and in the classroom. He co-founded the Santa Fe Institute and taught physics at the University of New Mexico. He also served at the California Institute of Technology as a Professor of Theoretical Physics Emeritus and at the University of Southern California as the Presidential Professor of Physics and Medicine.
Family Life
He was the son of Arthur Isidore Gell-Mann and Pauline Reichstein. He had a son and a daughter with J. Margaret Dow, his wife from 1955 until her death in 1981. He married his second wife, Marcia Southwick in 1992.
Achievements
Besides the Nobel Prize for Physics, he also achieved other accolades such as the Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics and the John J. Carty Award.
Death
He died aged 89 on May 24, 2019.
