Mohamed Aboutrika is an Egyptian retired professional footballer most known for coming second on the list at the African Footballer of the Year Award in 2008. In his playing days, he predominantly operated as either an attacking midfielder or a forward.
Personal Life
As of 2022, the retired Egyptian striker has three children; his sons, Ahmed and Seif Aboutrika, and his daughter, Roqaya. His son Ahmed followed in his footsteps and became a professional footballer.
Aboutrika graduated from Cairo University with a degree in philosophy.
Career and Notable Achievements
Aboutrika was signed on to play for Al Ahly which was one of Africa’s top football teams in 2004. At Al Ahly, he was one of the top scorers of the team as, during his first 13 games for the team, Aboutrika scored 11 goals. As the leading marksman for Al Ahly, he helped the club to win the Egyptian Premier League seven consecutive times, from 2005 to 2011. He also helped Al Ahly win the Egypt Cup twice and the Egyptian Super Cup five times.
With Al Ahly, he won the CAF Champions League a whopping five times. He also won the CAF Super Cup with the Egyptian side four times.
Prior to joining Al Ahly, the Egyptian striker played for Tersana Sporting Club from 1997 to 2003. There he found the net 26 times in about 52 appearances.
In 2006, Aboutrika with the Egyptian national team, won the African Cup of Nations, and that same year, during the FIFA Club World Cup, he aided Al Ahly to finish third in the competition.
He calmly converted the last penalty kick of the 2006 CAF Africa Cup of Nations final to help Egypt secure the title. Perhaps his greatest accomplishment came in 2008, when he guided his Egyptian national team to gold at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Ghana.
In 2008, the BBC named him African Footballer of the Year.
He was crowned best Egyptian Player of the Year by the Egyptian Football Association four times.
He made the list of CAF Team of the Year four times. He was also named in the Africa Cup of Nations Dream Team twice – in 2006 and 2008.
Controversies
He faced a number of controversies and one such included being allegedly linked to an outlawed group by the name, “Muslim Brotherhood”. I was at a point placed on a terror list by Egyptian officials in his country.

Aboutrika, in 2013, informed the public about retiring from football. This was done via Twitter.
